It all starts with a vanishing frontier, with red dust rising under a crushing sun, with the burning wind of Oklahoma. With Dull Knife and Little Wolf deciding to stand up.
It all starts when Aunt Lucy offers them cakes they decline.
When Agent Miles offers them hoes they refuse.
When Colonel Mizner offers them chains they can't carry.
That's how it all starts.
And so they begin to walk.
To their home.
Up North, where the grass is thick and the trees mighty.

They walk.
On the earth they walk.
Soul in the sky they walk.
In dust or snow,
Free they walk.
Captain Murray follows them.
In a slow flow of men, a merry-go-round of lost army and hidden clouds.
When Murray faces Little Wolf,
Anger faces mercy, the living and the dying.
Just a gaze at the future.
Then the bugle echoes in still air.
Starving horses, dancing soldiers, thirsty shadows.
And a child receives a bullet in his neck.

One call them Dog Soldiers.
Warriors, proud and quiet.
A deep silence of the soul.
They're already dead.
They're already gone.
When the army reaches them, they can only see Little Wolf smoking.
Sitting above the trench, he is smoking and watching.
At the weary and frighten men holding their guns.
Pity and regret both lightning his pale smile.
He does what he has to do.
He does and heads north again.

A blue line.
Blue jackets on grey horses.
And the green light of electric wire,
The railroad and the cannon,
Civilian militia.
All chasing ghosts.
Jaws of coyotes are clenched on poneys' corpses.
The village splits in two, families in the desert, families in the mountains.
But dry dunes are treacherous and soldiers merciless.
Dull Knife cries his lost pride.
Yet, because they're dead, nothing can happen to them anymore.

They die.
In prison they die.
In slaughter they die.
In cold or hunger,
Free they die.
Little Wolf smokes his corn cob pipe in the white of the snow.
Along the Powder River, he waits for his brothers.
And only receives the White Man's forgiveness.
When the sun returns, he heads up north again.
Indian stories are just a memory.
While Half Moon is mocking at men's fight.
